This calculator estimates the monthly payment and total interest on a fixed-rate auto loan from the amount borrowed, APR and term. Enter the loan figures shown by a lender to see the payment and interest implied by those assumptions; the national average rate itself varies by borrower, vehicle and reporting period.
Formula
The calculator uses the standard fixed-payment amortization formula. Let P be the amount borrowed in dollars, APR the annual percentage rate in percent, and Y the term in years. The monthly rate is r = APR / 1200, and the number of monthly payments is n = 12 × Y. The monthly payment is P × r / [1 − (1 + r)−n]. Total interest is the monthly payment multiplied by the number of payments, minus the original principal: payment × n − P.
APR is divided by 1,200 to express a percent-per-year figure as a monthly decimal rate. The output rounds the payment to cents, then uses that displayed rounded payment to calculate total interest. Real loan disclosures may use different payment dates, fees or rounding conventions.
Worked Example
Using the default inputs—$20,000 borrowed, 8% APR and a five-year term—the number of monthly payments is 5 × 12 = 60, and the monthly rate is 8 / 1,200 = 0.0066667.
- Calculate the payment: $20,000 × 0.0066667 / [1 − (1.0066667)−60] = approximately $405.53 per month.
- Calculate total paid using the rounded payment: $405.53 × 60 = $24,331.80.
- Subtract the amount borrowed: $24,331.80 − $20,000 = $4,331.80 total interest.
The estimate therefore returns a monthly payment of $405.53 and total interest of $4,331.80 for these inputs.
Assumptions
- The interest rate stays fixed for the entire term.
- Payments are equal monthly installments, made at the end of each monthly period.
- Interest is treated as monthly, using APR divided by 12 (with APR entered as a percentage).
- The calculation excludes taxes, title and registration costs, insurance, optional products, lender fees and any down payment or trade-in not reflected in the loan amount.
What Is the National Average Auto Loan Interest Rate?
There is no single universal national average that applies to every auto borrower. A reported average is a statistic for a particular group of loans over a stated period; it may describe new or used vehicles, a particular borrower-credit category, or the average rate on loans originated during a specific quarter. The answer changes depending on which population and measurement a source uses.
For a current figure, check a recent report that identifies its date, vehicle type and borrower group. Averages published by market-data providers or government statistical sources can differ because their samples and methods differ. A national average is useful as broad context, but it is not a personal quote, an approval promise or a rate that a lender must offer.
Why Auto Loan Rates Differ
An individual APR reflects more than the national average. Lenders evaluate applications under their own criteria, and the final offer can also depend on the vehicle and loan structure. Relevant factors may include:
- Credit history and application details: lenders may assess payment history, existing obligations and other information under their own underwriting process.
- New versus used vehicle: rates and available terms can differ by vehicle age, mileage or type.
- Loan length and amount: changing the term or amount changes the payment and may affect an offer.
- Down payment or trade-in: these can reduce the amount financed, though they do not by themselves establish a specific APR.
- Market conditions and lender policies: advertised pricing and actual offers can change over time and vary across providers.
These are general influences, not a formula for predicting an individual’s rate. Use the APR and fees in an actual written offer for a meaningful payment estimate.
How to Compare an Average With a Loan Offer
Make sure the figures refer to the same kind of loan before comparing them. A new-car average may not be comparable with an offer for a used vehicle, and a rate reported for borrowers in one credit category may not represent another. Also distinguish APR from a nominal interest rate: APR is intended to reflect certain costs of borrowing, but the exact included charges and presentation should be checked in the lender’s disclosure.
Compare the amount financed, APR, term and any required fees alongside the monthly payment. For example, extending a term generally spreads repayment across more months, which can lower the payment while increasing the amount of interest paid when other assumptions are held constant. A payment alone can therefore hide meaningful differences in total cost. This calculator models interest and principal only; it does not decide which offer suits a person’s circumstances.
Common Misconceptions and Calculation Limits
A national average is not a guaranteed minimum, a universal “normal” rate or an estimate of what a particular applicant will qualify for. Likewise, a low advertised payment does not establish the total cost: it may reflect a longer term, a different amount financed or terms that do not apply to every borrower.
The calculator assumes a constant APR and regular monthly payments. It does not model variable rates, irregular first or final payments, late charges, payment holidays, optional add-ons or early payoff. It treats the entered APR as the rate used for monthly amortization; loan documents may apply interest and fees in ways that produce different figures. Enter the actual amount financed rather than a vehicle’s sticker price if the loan includes a down payment, trade-in credit, taxes or other charges.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the current national average auto loan rate?
It depends on the reporting date and the population measured, including whether the statistic covers new or used vehicles and which borrowers. Consult a recent source that states those details; an undated average may not be useful for a current comparison.
Is the national average the rate I will get?
No. It summarizes a group of loans and does not predict an individual offer. A lender’s written APR and loan terms are the relevant inputs for estimating a specific payment.
Does a longer car loan lower the interest rate?
Not necessarily. Term length and APR are separate loan terms. A longer term can reduce the scheduled monthly payment by spreading repayment out, but it may increase total interest because the balance is outstanding longer.
Is APR the same as the interest rate?
Not always. The interest rate measures the cost of borrowing principal, while APR is a standardized annualized measure intended to reflect certain borrowing costs as well. Review the loan disclosure to understand which charges apply and how figures are presented.
Why does my payment differ from this calculator?
The calculator assumes a fixed APR, equal monthly payments and no additional charges. A lender’s payment can differ because of fees, taxes, add-ons, payment timing, a different financed amount, or rounding and accrual methods.
This result is an estimate, and the lender’s disclosure gives the exact figures.
