This early loan repayment calculator estimates how extra monthly payments change your payoff time and total interest, using your balance, APR, scheduled payment, and extra amount. Enter the figures from your loan; the results are an arithmetic estimate, not a lender payoff quote.
Formula
The calculator uses a fixed monthly interest rate and assumes equal monthly payments. Let B be the current balance in dollars, a the APR in percent per year, P the scheduled monthly payment in dollars, and E the extra monthly payment in dollars. The monthly rate is r = a / 1200. The combined payment is M = P + E.
Estimated payoff months are n = ceil(round(−ln(1 − rB/M) / ln(1 + r), 6)). The same calculation using just P gives the baseline payoff months. Estimated interest is M × n − B; estimated interest with no extra payment is P × baseline months − B. Interest saved is the baseline estimate minus the estimate with the extra payment. The ceiling rounds payoff time up to a whole monthly payment period.
Worked Example
Using the calculator’s defaults: balance $20,000, APR 8%, scheduled payment $405.53, and extra monthly payment $100. The monthly rate is 8 / 1200 = 0.0066667, and the combined payment is $405.53 + $100 = $505.53.
- With the extra payment, the formula gives approximately 44.36 periods before rounding up, so estimated payoff time is 45 months.
- Estimated interest with the extra is $505.53 × 45 − $20,000 = $2,748.85.
- With the scheduled payment alone, the formula gives approximately 56.10 periods, rounded up to 57 months.
- Baseline estimated interest is $405.53 × 57 − $20,000 = $3,115.21. The estimated difference is $3,115.21 − $2,748.85 = $366.36.
These totals apply the stated rounded monthly payment throughout the calculation. Actual loan schedules can differ because the final payment is often smaller, payment dates vary, and lenders may calculate interest using daily balances.
Assumptions
- The APR remains fixed for the estimates, and the interest rate is converted to a monthly rate by dividing by 12.
- Payments occur monthly at the end of each monthly period; the extra amount is paid alongside every scheduled payment.
- Interest compounds monthly in this simplified model. The model treats each payment as the same amount, including the final period for estimating total interest.
- Fees, taxes, insurance, escrow, prepayment charges, and changes in payment or rate are not included.
What Early Repayment Means
Early repayment means paying principal sooner than the original schedule requires. A regular installment generally covers interest accrued for the period and reduces principal with whatever remains. When an extra amount is applied directly to principal, the balance falls faster. Future interest is then calculated on a smaller balance, which can reduce both the time to repay and the total interest.
“Extra payment” does not always mean the same thing operationally. Some servicers may hold an overpayment, apply it to a future installment, or require instructions for applying it to principal. Check the account’s payment options and confirm how an extra amount is credited. This calculator assumes it reduces the balance in addition to the scheduled installment.
How to Use and Read the Estimate
- Use the current principal balance, not the original amount borrowed. Check a recent statement or account record.
- Enter APR as a percentage, such as 8 for eight percent—not 0.08. Use the rate applicable to the loan now.
- Enter the required monthly payment and the additional amount you are modelling. If there is no extra payment, enter zero.
- Compare estimated months and interest with the baseline figures. The savings output is a modelled difference, not guaranteed cash savings or a payoff quote.
The results are sensitive to rounding and timing. A real loan may accrue interest daily, while this calculator uses monthly periods. If your payment varies, your rate adjusts, or you make a one-time lump-sum payment, the monthly-extra estimate will not represent that exact schedule. A separate payment-by-payment amortization schedule is more appropriate for irregular dates or amounts.
Costs, Limits, and Common Mistakes
The calculation is only valid when the monthly payment covers the interest accruing on the balance. If the payment is too small, the balance may not decline; if the extra payment is large enough to repay in a fraction of a period, the rounded month estimate is still a simplified schedule. The calculator’s input limits prevent negative balances, rates, or payments, but they do not guarantee the entered figures match a contract.
A frequent misunderstanding is that paying early automatically reduces the required monthly payment. In many repayment arrangements, extra principal shortens the schedule instead; the regular installment remains as agreed unless the loan is formally recast or otherwise changed. Another common error is using the original loan amount after many payments have already been made. Early-payoff estimates should begin with the current balance and the current required payment.
Check the loan documents or ask the servicer how to request a payoff amount for a particular date, how extra payments are allocated, and whether any charges or restrictions apply. Those details are contract-specific and are not determined by this calculator. The lender’s disclosure gives the exact figures; this result is an estimate.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does paying extra each month reduce total interest?
Under this calculator’s fixed-rate assumptions, extra principal reduces the balance sooner and the model estimates less interest. The realized difference depends on the lender’s calculation method, payment timing, and how the extra is applied.
Should I enter my original loan amount or current balance?
Enter the current outstanding balance for an early-repayment estimate. The original amount would overstate the debt remaining after payments have already been made.
Can I use this calculator for a one-time lump-sum payment?
This version models a recurring extra amount each month, not a single payment. A lump sum changes the balance at a particular date, so its effect depends on when it is made and how the servicer applies it.
Why does the lender’s payoff figure differ?
A payoff quote can include interest accrued through a specific date and contract-specific items. This estimate uses monthly periods and excludes fees and other charges, so it is not a substitute for a dated payoff quote.
Does early repayment lower my required monthly payment?
Not necessarily. This calculator estimates a shorter payoff period while keeping the scheduled payment unchanged. Ask the servicer whether a formal change to the payment schedule is available.
